Regular Talks

Our regular talks in French feature a wide range of topics.

Our talk of the month

'Josephine Baker's special visit'

with Barbara George

Tuesday 25th January 2022,  7.00pm

In the Clementhorpe Room

at the Priory Street Centre, York

(Off Micklegate)

'On 16th May 1945, a few days after VE Day, RAF Elvington outside of York  hosted a very special guest on the site of what is now the Yorkshire Air Museum.
Josephine Baker was born in 1906 in St Louis, USA and moved to Paris at the age of 19. She gained stardom status and became a glamorous fashion icon and showperson. At the outbreak of the second world war, she was recruited by the French military intelligence.
In the depths of Yorkshire, in May 1944, two French squadrons took base in Elvington. This village would  become known as ‘La petite France’  for 18 months.
For those present, Josephine Baker’s visit would become an unforgettable memory.

This talk will be given in French by Barbara George, who was born and educated in France. Until the end of 2021, she was the Director of the Yorkshire Air Museum and Allied Armed Forces Memorial.
