'Josephine Baker's Special Visit'

'On 16th May 1945, a few days after VE Day, RAF Elvington outside of York hosted a very special guest on the site of what is now the Yorkshire Air Museum. Josephine Baker was born in 1906 in St Louis, USA and moved to Paris at the age of 19. She gained stardom status and became a glamorous fashion icon and showperson. At the outbreak of the second world war, she was recruited by the French military intelligence. In the depths of Yorkshire, in May 1944, two French squadrons took base in Elvington. This village would become known as ‘La petite France’ for 18 months. For those present, Josephine Baker’s visit would become an unforgettable memory.'


This talk will be given in French by Barbara George, who was born and educated in France. Until the end of 2021, she was the Director of the Yorkshire Air Museum and Allied Armed Forces Memorial. When and where:
